While I was shopping in Rotterdam, I was looking for a place to get something for lunch. At the Schildersstraat (near the Witte de Withstraat) I found the Bagel bakery It is a small lunchroom that also serves burgers in the evenings.
The lunchroom is dividend in two parts, separated by the open kitchen. You can see and hear everything. The tables are grey and bare. It has sober white walls and a high ceiling. This and the open kitchen causes a lot of noise, so it is not exactly a place where you would go for a relaxed lunch. The toilets in the back were not at all clean and had some broken parts. A bit of work needs to be done there.
Of course, the main menu exists of bagels. I opted for the bagel with cream cheese and grilled vegetables and a fresh mint tea to accompany it. The service was really fast, which is nice if you want to have a quick lunch.
The bagel itself turned out to be a sundried tomato bagel. You could see the tomato on top. The cream cheese on the bottom had the tomato in it as well. There were a lot of grilled vegetables on it: aubergine, courgette, peppers, onion and tomatoes. Because of the word ‘grilled’ in the name, I had expected the vegetables to be served warm, but they were not. They were apparently grilled some time earlier. There was a little bit of olive oil and parmesan cheese on top. The cream cheese was full of herbes, which complemented the vegetables nicely. I really enjoyed the bagel and it was by far enough for a lunch for me.
I like the Bagel Bakery for a quick pitstop or take-away (which they offer as well), but I wouldn’t go there for catching up with friends.
