When I go shopping in the city centre of Rotterdam, I almost always start early, like, I make sure to be there around 10 o’clock in the morning. This means I usually haven’t had any coffee yet. Since I started drinking coffee about two years ago, it has become kind of a habit to have one cup of latte or cappuccino in the morning. I don’t drink more coffee really, but I have gotten quite attached to my one cup of coffee. So whenever I go shopping I take a break at one of my favorite coffee places in the city centre. I sometimes choose the bigger ones everyone knows, like Hema, or LaPlace, but most of the time I’d rather visit a smaller and less crowded place. Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:
Alexandrium shopping centre is one of the most well known indoor shopping centres of Rotterdam. Most of us locals still call it the ‘Oosterhof’, which was the original name of the first part of the shopping centre. As it expanded with the second and third part, the name changed to Alexandrium. It is really close to my house and I do feel kind of spoiled sometimes with all of the shops so close to home. There are also many places in Alexandrium where you can get something to eat. One of my favorite new spots is Frooters, a frozen yoghurt and juice bar. I fell in love with frozen yoghurt in New York City and ever since I am always on the lookout for new spots that sell it near me. Lees verder
For Christmas, my grandparents gave me this Dapeppa jar that contains almost all of the ingredients to bake coffee cookies. They know how much I like to bake and they love to try the end results of all this baking, so they knew this present would be a succes. Little did they know I had been baking cookies as a Christmas gift for them! It was hilarious when we were unwrapping our presents, can you imagine! So funny! I must say I didn’t really bake much after Christmas, except for the carrot cake and apple pie for my birthday. But last sunday, I was in a cookie-baking-mood and rembered the Dapeppa jar in my cabinet. You only need to add 70 grams of butter and an egg, which I still had in storage as well, so I was ready to make these cookies with chocolate chunks and mocha beans. Dapeppa is a Dutch brand that uses only the finest ingredients for their cookie mixes, which made me curious to try this. Lees verder
Picknick is another place I read so much about on other blogs and every review I read was so positive that I needed to check it out myself. I honestly didn’t know it was in the place it is (at the Mariniersweg), even though I live in Rotterdam and I walked past it probably countless times. Really bad, I know. But this time I walked inside! Lees verder
While I was shopping for Sinterklaas presents in Rotterdam, I wanted to have something nice and warm to drink. As I had just passed by V&D, I was almost ready to turn around and grab a coffee or tea there as a template of The Tea Lab caught my eye. It pointed in the direction of where it was located, which is just around the corner from V&D. I figured I might give it a try, as I never heard of it before.
Lof der Zoetheid was on my wishlist to visit for literally years already. I discovered this place when I went to visit Kookpunt for the first time with my parents. We had been in this amazing shop for a couple of hours and afterwards we wanted to go and have lunch somewhere. Next to Kookpunt, on the corner of the block was Lof der Zoetheid. As we looked inside, we noticed the place was crammed full! There was no room for us to sit, so we didn’t go for lunch there we but at home instead. As we never heard of it before we wondered what was so special about Lof der Zoetheid. So at home I looked it up on the internet and I found the most wonderful reviews. I found out that especially their cakes, lunches and high teas were incredible. Then I knew I had to go there at least once!
When I travel to work, I have to change trains at Rotterdam Central Station. I have about 10 minutes to go from one train to another (and sometimes longer when one of the trains is delayed) and after doing this for a couple of years now, I have learned how to get to the train on time and get myself some take-away coffee. There are many places at Rotterdam Central Station where you can get your dose of coffee and I decided to compare all of them.
Because I do drink coffee, but I only like coffee with a large amount of milk, I chose either ‘Koffie Verkeerd’ (coffee with a lot of milk and often no foam) or a Latte at every occasion.
