Explore the store: Frooters, Rotterdam

Alexandrium shopping centre is one of the most well known indoor shopping centres of Rotterdam. Most of us locals still call it the ‘Oosterhof’, which was the original name of the first part of the shopping centre. As it expanded with the second and third part, the name changed to Alexandrium. It is really close to my house and I do feel kind of spoiled sometimes with all of the shops so close to home. There are also many places in Alexandrium where you can get something to eat. One of my favorite new spots is Frooters, a frozen yoghurt and juice bar. I fell in love with frozen yoghurt in New York City and ever since I am always on the lookout for new spots that sell it near me. Lees verder

Explore the store: Van Delft pepernotenwinkel, Markthal

image

It is almost Sinterklaas  (a national holiday in the Netherlands) so it is also my favorite time of the year: time for pepernoten, kruidnoten and chocolate. Kruidnoten are my favorite Sinterklaas treats, they are little spiced cookies which are baked untill they are crispy.

When I heard about the Pepernotenwinkel (which actually sells kruidnoten by the way) from Van Delft in Harderwijk, Haarlem and Amsterdam I knew I had to plan a visit to one of these cities soon. I have this weakness for kruidnoten, almost to the point of an addiction ;p When I see them in the stores in september, which is very early actually, I just can’t control myself and I have to get them. I have tried every variation I could find so far, but my favorites are the plain, truffle and yoghurt kruidnoten. But when I read that van Delft has 35 (!) different flavors  I knew I had so much more to explore. How delighted I was when I found out that there would be a temporary stand in the Markthal from Van Delft! Halleluja! No trip to Harderwijk, Haarlem or Amsterdam needed!

Explore the Markthal in Rotterdam

Markthal Rotterdam, outsideI had been looking forward to this ever since it was announced that Rotterdam would get its’ own Markthal: an indoor foodmarket filled with food stores and stands where you could get anything you would want on food products. This would have to become a foodlovers’ dream! So after years of watching the building being created and following the news about it, last week the Markthal was finally officially opened. Queen Maxima did the opening ceremony and when I saw this being broadcasted on tv, I knew I had to visit the Markthal very soon. Fortunately, I live in Rotterdam and when I go to one of my jobs, I have to switch trains at the station next to it. Frequent visits guaranteed, especially since it is open 7 days a week! So I went there only little a week after to see it for myself.

Explore the store: Ten to Three Bakery, Rotterdam

Ten to Three Bakery RotterdamIn the centre of Rotterdam, hidden underneath the Bijenkorf, lies a small, but magical cupcake store, called Ten to Three Bakery. They also have another location in Rotterdam and one in Delft (where I work, yay!), but the one in de Aert van Nesstraat also has a small tearoom where you can also have a cupcake break with your friends while you are shopping. Ten to Three Bakery has a large variety of cupcakes, ranging form classics (for example vanilla, chocolate, lemon), to speciality (salted caramel, cookies and cream, strawberry cheesecake) and a limited edition that changes every few weeks. They sell all the flavors in normal and mini sized cupcakes. It’s nice to know that they sell sugarfree, glutenfree and vegan cupcakes as well! Besides the cupcakes, you can get macarons, brownies, muffins and scones. All the sweets look super cute, with customised designs for each specific cupcake.
